This Week at NYT | Course presentations, the Yard, and alumni news

Posted 29 Jul 2023 by Joe Duggan

14th-25th August

It’s all go at NYT. It might be the closing week of our East End Season at the Yard Theatre, and we may have recently seen our Junior, Backstage and Epic Stages summer courses come to an end, but preparations are already well underway for Zigger Zagger and The REP West End Season, coming up this September!

East End Season at the Yard Theatre

After three weeks at the Yard Theatre, NYT’s East End Season at The Yard is coming to a close. The season has seen three very different but equally fantastic plays on offer, and has garnered a lot of praise from audiences and reviewers. Rounding the season off is The Host by Nessah Muthy, and directed by Zoe Lafferty, a new play written in response to Brexit and the European Refugee crisis. The play has been accompanied at the Yard by a 360° video featuring real accounts of refugees now living in the UK commissioned by NYT, and produced by Epiphany VR.

Take a look at some of the reviews we’ve received:

The Host:

★★★★★ - Underdog Reviews

★★★★ - Evening Standard

Summer Courses

Our Backstage and Junior 2017 intake courses came to an end last week, with each course culminating in an end of course showing. The Backstage Course presented a promenade performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup where they were based for the course, whilst our Junior participants put on a fantastic show at LABAN.

This week marks the end of the Epic Stages course, also based at Rose Bruford. We’ll be saying goodbye to our new Epic Stages graduates for now, after four weeks with us, but we know their futures in NYT and the industry will be bright. The course concludes with a showing this evening, where each group performs a 30 minute piece written and directed by our NYT associates who have worked with them for the course.

We’ve had a whole host of masterclasses going on over the past couple of weeks from Performing Shakespeare, Acting for Screen and Audition Technique. Not to mention our Start Up Summer Course which participants have been loving.

The dates for our October Half Term Masterclasses are now online and available to book

Coming Up

Next up it’s Zigger Zagger, returning to NYT 50 years after it was first commissioned by the theatre.  Our 50 strong ensemble have been working really hard on the show in rehearsals. Want to find out more? Read these director’s notes by Juliet Knight.

An irreverent tale of tribalism, the play follows the story of Harry Philton, a passionate fan of the local football team, who struggles between the life of sex, violence and drink football offers and a stable future.

September also sees the beginning of the NYT REP Company’s West End season at the Ambassadors Theatre. Keep your eyes on our social media for all the latest updates from the company as they prepare for three months on the West End stage!
